And if fans hate the soundtrack outright, they can chalk it up to a mere stopgap between Lamar's proper solo albums. If it strikes out at the awards show, then at least it still extends Lamar's impressive chart-topping run. If the album cleans up at the Grammys, including Album of the Year, then fans can use it as another piece of evidence to argue for Lamar's "greatest of all time" status. Lamar fans can categorize the Black Panther soundtrack however they want based on commercial and industry reception in order to fit their own narrative. (Then again, it could also go 0-8, following Jay-Z's shutout last year.) If the Lamar-produced soundtrack does win the biggest award of the evening, it will feel like Leonardo DiCaprio finally winning his first Academy Award for Best Actor in 2016 for The Revenant: relieving, but also anticlimactic and kind of nonsensical. Most people probably aren't banking on Black Panther to win Album of the Year, so there's no chance of a massive upset as in years past. In that sense, the album is risk-free proposition. Still, Black Panther's AOTY nomination is a huge honor, and the soundtrack will likely clean up in the rap categories ("King's Dead" for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance, "All the Stars" for Best Rap/Sung Performance) as Lamar has done in the past. The 2019 Grammys are no different, only this year, Lamar is not the most deserving AOTY candidate as far as I'm concerned, that distinction goes to Janelle Monáe's Dirty Computer by a mile. Lamar is no stranger to this category, famously getting snubbed for each of his last three studio albums: DAMN., To Pimp a Butterfly and Good Kid, M.A.A.D City. At this point, it's practically a (cruel) running joke that Lamar will inevitably receive an AOTY nomination, only to lose to a milquetoast pop album. The Grammy Awards committee apparently felt the same, as Lamar leads this year's nominees with eight nominations for Black Panther, including the prestigious Album of the Year. The album is also more concise and consistent than many of the bloated, uneven solo albums released by some of hip-hop's biggest stars last year, including Drake, Nicki Minaj, Post Malone, Eminem and Kanye West.

Still, the album outshines the bulk of contemporary soundtracks, and the songs that do appear in Black Panther work remarkably well. Nearly a year later, my own opinion of the album has cooled I now consider it an ambitious, albeit workmanlike, collection with a few standout collaborations and several by-numbers trap-lite bangers. Let's take a look at Kendrick's albums from worst to best.At the time of its release, I touted the Black Panther soundtrack as a landmark achievement that would open new doors for Lamar as a curator and producer. However, some albums outweigh the others. Each one possesses a level of cultural relevance and commercial success independent of the rest. His concept-driven masterpieces are in a class of their own.

You can make the argument that every album in Kendrick's discography is a classic. K-Dot is an enigmatic mad genius who rarely misses the mark when pushing the envelope. Not only does he continue to be relevant, but he does so without overexposing himself, either musically or personally. Lamar's lyrical ability and ever-evolving creativity separates him from the vast majority of rappers. The man known as Kung-Fu Kenny is a favorite amongst his peers, die-hard Hip-Hop fans, and even former presidents. He's covered California gang culture, Black adolescence, and social justice in an almost cinematic fashion. The Compton emcee is considered one of the greatest rappers of his generation. Kendrick Lamar is as prolific as he is innovative.
